The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry along with the American Dental Association recommends that the child's first visit should coincide with his or her first birthday. Although they recommend this age, our office encourages infant exams to give parents of newborns a chance to speak to the dentist about any questions or concerns they might have. Often, this first visit involves a simple oral examination and talking to the parents about oral hygiene techniques, teething, oral habits, such as pacifier use and thumb sucking and preventing dental decay. These exams are encouraged because they can foster good dental habits and enable early intervention if problems do exist.
As an office that emphasizes preventive dental care, we encourage parents to seek dental information about their infants as early as newborns. We offer these Infant Exams as a free service to our families and the community. We start our Infant Exam campaign in February, which has been designated as “Children’s Dental Health Month” by its sponsor the American Dental Association.
